Southside Solidarity Network (SSN)

Contacts: Clare Johnson, Daniela Petuchowski, and Hannah Jacoby

Listhost: southsidesn@listhost.uchicago.edu

Purpose: We exist to
1. create a vehicle through which University students can make a substantive connection with the surrounding community through projects that include, but are not limited to, the Southside Together Organizing for Power , community gardening and other community events.
2. have a group in which individual research on local political, socio-cultural, and economic issues can enter into collective dialogue and which is dedicated to disseminating this knowledge to a wider University and community audience.

3.
educate incoming and current students on the history and current state of University-community affairs through projects like the Orientation Southside Engagement Project

Goals: develop community accountability for UofC through community partnership, research, and responsible activism

Accomplishments: CitySpace Conference, Student Salon on University Community relations, research on development on South Side

Frustrations: Complex power structure within University: who to address? Hard to focus on one goal, creating a functioning group without overbearing hierarchy

Resources: Center for the Study of Race, Politics and Culture, community partners in Woodlawn, the Student-Tenant Organizing Project
